LONG ISLAND SOUND

Christine Habermass - 1998
A multimedia artist named Caeser Pink leads this band, although they call themselves a community,
which started on the campus of the Penn State University. They are now based in Brooklyn, NY. Their
pamphlets promise a raging party at performances, and an open invitation to all to lose all
inhibitions. The first song on their demo CD is called "Dionysus Rising" and is a strange opening
- people chanting different thoughts about sex and love. ("I want you." "I want your every breath
to be a sigh of desperation"). "Mamma Down" has a great beat, like a Parliment-Funkadelic song. Losing
yourself to sensuality is the main theme of the lyrics. I liked the music overall, it is original and
unpredictable. One track that I didn't like is the spoken-word "The Daily Grind" in which Pink condemns
people sitting in a coffee shop for being pretentious. But isn't a spoken-word piece about a
coffee shop a little pretentious? Other than that I am curious to see how Caeser Pink's music
translates live. I'm sure it's as wild as they proclaim.
