Historical Context

In the late 1990's the internet was a blank canvas waiting to be defined. People were asking "What is the internet?" "What will it become?" "What can it be used for?" For a short time the internet was filled with personal websites created by average people, without corporate filters (Such as facebook, twitter, or myspace) to define the parameters.

To artists the internet was full of potential and possibility. It allowed artists to connect to an audience without third party sponsorship. Painters were no longer dependent on galleries, musicians on record labels, and filmmakers on television and movie theatres.

We now know that artists usually use the internet to create websites that act as advertising pamphlets to showcase their work, bio, events, etc. In general the internet has developed into a platform where 99 per cent of the public's browsing time is spent on sites owned by large corporations.

But in 1997, when people were still trying to define what the internet could be, Caeser Pink and a group of artists from The Imperial Orgy collective began building their first website. The Imperial Orgy's approach reflected a different vision of the web's potential. Caeser Pink's idea was to use the internet as a new artistic medium in itself, rather than just an advertising billboard to display artistic works created in traditional mediums.

The Imperial Orgy website is a linear interactive multimedia experience that requires the visitor to give of themselves in order to participate in the experience. The site is designed to provide a personal journey of spiritual self-discovery, with concepts borrowing from eastern philosophy, psychologists Carl Jung and R.D. Laing, mythologist Joseph Campbell, as well as from Caeser Pink's personal life experiences.

The Imperial Orgy website debuted to the public in 1998. In the years that followed reaction to the site was extraordinary. Visitors claimed that the website "changed their lives," or "opened their eyes to a new way of seeing the world." The site was featured on the cover of .Net magazine and landed The Imperial Orgy on the cover of Mac Today magazine.

The website is now being re-released to the public as a document of its time in the early history of the internet. Including outdated cultural references, and what might be considered archaic coding and design choices.
